The Health of Nepali Pharma Industry
The Nepalese pharmaceutical industries have good business outlook due to favorable government policies, existing and potential markets both domestic and export, new openings due to provisions of SAFTA and WTO/TRIPS, growth in health institutions and health awareness, and others. The critical core success factors for pharmaceutical industries are noticed to be marketing, product quality; product portfolio; possession of quality certifications, demand fulfilling capability, economy of scale, and research and development.
According to APPON, there are 47 pharmaceutical companies registered with them. Forty of them are running and 37 of them are WHO-GMP certified.
Around a dozen other pharmaceutical companies have been registered and are expected to start operation over the next few years.
Pharmaceutical industrialists say that the size of the domestic pharmaceutical market currently stands at Rs 46 billion and that the industry has been growing at 18-20 percent per year over the past 7-8 years. Similarly, according to them the investment in the industry has already reached around Rs 18 billion.
The entry of private sector pharmaceutical producers after the 1990s changed the face of the domestic drug market which was once overwhelmingly dominated by foreign products.
Such has been the growth of the pharmaceutical industry that even at times when many other manufacturing industries seem to be performing badly, investors seem to be confident and willing to invest in pharmaceutical production.

Nepal’s wine industry is in high spirits as the market has been expanding steadily with the drink becoming more and more popular among Nepalis.

Wine breweries have been around in Nepal for decades, but they have remained largely in the background as they have not been able to make much headway in the market until recently. With more Nepalis starting to quaff domestic wine at home and parties, producers expect boom times ahead.

Nepal’s annual wine requirement totals 15 million litres. Middle-income people are the largest buyers of domestic wines.

Though most Nepali wines are sweet and fruity, producers are moving towards bold and robust flavours, hoping for a boom. Recent decades have seen a flourishing of Nepali wines, mostly red, made primarily from berries.

Quality and price, and people welcoming the growing drinking culture has encouraged expansion of the Wine Industy. This increasing demand for wine can be attributed to a changing culture of drinking, where more women are enjoying alcohol.

There are about 50 brands of wine are produced exclusively in Nepal.
